Letter from the
President… February 13, 2007 From: Art
Wells RE: Capistrano
Unified Everyone; I would just like to thank all of the parents,
coaches, and players who showed up at the Meeting last night and gave their
support to the people who spoke to the Board of Trustees. I would also like to thank Chris Dunbar,
Linda Appleton, Larry Corwin, Eddie Limbaga, and Nate Gilbertson for standing up and speaking to the
Board so eloquently. You all did a
great job!!! Also, a special thank
you goes out to Jay Piz who has, along with Chris and Linda, spearheaded
this effort to get recognition for the student-athletes in the Capo
District. Jay has toiled over this
task and spent many, many hours getting feedback from multiple sources and
publicizing the challenge to many other sources. You’ve all done a terrific job, and as we
saw firsthand at the meeting last night, the bureaucratic wheels of
government turn slowly at best. The turnout was awesome as we even had
parents, players, and coaches from other districts that made the trip down
to support the cause. Thanks to each
and every one of you who took the time and effort to come out and support
us. The School Board has basically taken our
request “under advisement” and has asked us to put together a
“sub-committee” of four people to meet with the Board and try to resolve
the various “issues” that remain in question. We believe most of the “issues” revolve
around the old and unwarranted miss-information that the Board’s staff has
put together. They were talking
about the hundreds of thousands of dollars they would have to expend to
have Certified teachers hired to give classes for P.E. Credits, to oversee
dry-land practices, and what about facilities at the schools, and
transportation to and from the games, and insurance issues, and liability
issues, et., etc., etc. Most of the information the Board was presented by
their “staff” was outdated and incorrect and all of us who spoke tried our
best to dispel those thoughts from the minds of the Board. After we spoke, the Board had discussion
and asked questions, and then the “staff member”, Mrs. Sherine
Smith, came up with all of these negatives, and I’m assuming most if not
all of them were based on a legal brief secured by the District back in
2002! That’s five years ago! One of the Board members finally suggested
we try to get these “differences” worked out and suggested the
“sub-committee” idea. So, that’s
where we stand and we will keep everyone in the loop as far as any
additional progress made. After the
sub-committee meets and works things out, it will go to a Board vote,
hopefully in our favor, sometime in the near future. Thanks again to all who came and supported
the cause, and we’ll see you at the rinks. Regards; Art
